This semester I am taking Fibers with Eva Polizzi. It is a studio course I am required to take as an art education major and I am beyond happy it is required! I am truly enjoying the course so far. In fibers I will be learning about the different fiber techniques such as hand-sewing, embroidery, knitting, crocheting, and weaving. I am really looking forward to learning these techniques because it is something completely new for me!
Along with these techniques, Eva is encouraging us to keep a sourcebook/sketchbook. She asked us to do some sort of a collage or mood board each week, which is something I am enjoying right now. Collages are something I truly adore making. I simply love the idea of taking all different materials and rearranging them into a new cohesive design.
On the first day of class Eva provided us with all sorts of postcards and we were asked to pick whichever postcard appealed to us. I choose this one (below). This specific postcard really appealed to me because of the beach scenery. Before moving to Pennsylvania I lived on Long Island, where beaches are around every corner so this postcard took me back there and made me very happy!
After picking a postcard, we were then asked to create a collage/mood board using the postcard as inspiration. For my design I kept the postcard as shown above because I did not want to cover the picture because I really loved it! I decided to work with the back of the postcard going off of my love for the beach and came up with this:
I kept the theme of beaches and added some words that really spoke to me such as welcome, love, freedom, beautiful, and expression. I feel my design is an accurate description of who I am, what I believe in, and what truly makes me happy. It is a very simple collage but I love it!
I am really looking forward to the rest of collages/mood boards I will be creating and to all of the new fiber techniques I will be learning!
